With auto categorization in Spend Center, the Category or Expense Category custom fields are automatically populated using Artificial Intelligence (AI) in any transactions that include those fields.

Transaction auto categorization is enabled by default. This article details how to manage the auto categorization setting and how to identify which transactions include custom fields automatically filled using this feature.

How AI model works

When the AI model runs, it analyzes the merchant, transaction information, and the history of custom field option selections for similar transactions. It also utilizes natural language processing to review the company's historical coding patterns and historical Spend Center coding patterns. The AI model does not process receipt information, as transactions may not have receipts or didn't have receipts at the time of transaction.

When a transaction is analyzed through the AI model, a probability score is assigned to each option that could be assigned to the custom field. An option is only assigned to the custom field if it reaches a probability score that meets a specific threshold, which increases the likelihood of accuracy. If no probability score meets this threshold, the field is left blank and can be filled in manually.

If you make any corrections to an automatically-categorized field, our AI model adapts for those corrections and gets smarter over time.
